Sunflower Standouts
Felds of sunflowers are a common sight in Kansas during the late summer. I love just walking through these fields and snapping photos of the beautiful yellow flower. The word helianthus refers to a plant which turns its flowers and leaves to the sun and the name Helianthus Annuus comes from the Greek language, with helios meaning sun, anthus meaning flower and annuus meaning annual. However in the 16th century it was shown that mature sunflowers face their flowers in a generally easterly direction.
